ting
Tings are real-time editing session using collaborative editor software. A common document, as many cursors on it as participants in the session. All can write everywhere, all entirely real-time. Every user has a different background color so you can understand who typed what. Tings can be combined with VoIP on run parallel with second life. The documents written during a ting are exported to a wiki page soon after the ting. A web-preview updating every 60 seconds makes the contents of an ongoing ting readable in a browser.
Tings started in early 2005 and moved several times so they are a bit "scattered"
There is a ting-feed.
For testing collab editor software during web3d-camp there is the page web3d-camp on the gobby standalone server ting.art.sheep.pl, default port 6522
About gobby collab-editor-wiki: gobby.
We can let the regular ting on Sunday 18:00 UTC, 2007-09-09 take place in second life.
We have voice sad visual connection via second life and a text interface that is essentially different from the chat function in second life. You can collaboratively shape a text in a collab-editor, all can fix typos everywhere, reword sections, cut and paste entire paragraphs ... It has basically all the freedom you have in a word processing program or editing a wiki page just that you are not alone doing it.
Tings tend to not prescribe a topic but rather let topics arise from participators' current interests and the conversation. Changing topic is perfectly fine in a ting (if it's the right moment).
Collab-editor is also excellent to summarize speeches, presentations, workshops. Some participants summarize, correct each other, reword during the event, finally the page is copied to a wiki page and the summary is online.
To try out you have to install gobby (choose the latest version). Start it and click "join session". Host: ting.sheep.art.pl, leave the default port 6522, choose a name and a color (not too dark, else your text isn't readable properly). Click ok. Gobby connects. In the upper bar you find "document list" and "user list". Open them to see what pages exist and who else is connected. Open the page web-3d-camp.
The web-preview currently is not yet functional after a fatal disk-crash on the gobby-standalone server short ago, sry.
